Pitching and care
How do I choose a good pitch?
Look for flat ground that drains well and isn't at risk of flooding. Face the door away from the wind if you can.
Can I leave my tent up long term?
Yes, as long as you look after it. Reproof the canvas every 4 to 6 weeks, keep the guy ropes evenly tight, and check it after bad weather.
Our tents are designed for temporary use, so we don't recommend them as permanent structures.
Can I pitch on a wooden platform or on sand?
- Wooden platforms: possible, but leave at least 1m around the edge for the guy ropes.
- Sand: fine for the day with sand pegs, but we don't recommend it overnight.
How do I stop mould and mildew?
Always make sure the tent is completely dry before you pack it away, including the groundsheet. If you have to pack it wet, get it out and dry it within a day or two.
Our maintenance guide has more tips.
Why is there condensation inside?
It's normal, especially in Oxford tents, which don't breathe. Open the windows and roll up the sides when it's dry to let air through.
How often should I clean and reproof?
- Regular or long-term use: every 4 to 6 weeks
- Occasional use: once a year
Reproof when water stops beading on the canvas. The maintenance guide shows you how.
Should I weather a new canvas tent?
It's optional. Wetting and drying a new canvas tent helps the fibres swell and close any tiny needle holes along the seams.
How should I store my tent?
Somewhere dry, protected from leaks and safe from mice. Make sure it's completely dry first.
How long will my tent last?
With good care, many years. Dry it fully before storing, reproof it regularly, and keep the guy ropes balanced. See the maintenance guide.
